Though Haidee and Matthew (Matt) graduated in the same class at the University of Richmond, they didn’t know each other. They “officially” met four years later when both had moved to Charlottesville to further their educations. “I didn’t know anyone, so I tracked down another U. of R. grad, surprised I hadn’t heard his name before,” Haidee says. It was Matt, who was also new to the area and happy to make a friend.

Soon after, they started dating, and a year later, Matt surprised Haidee with a spa massage during her exams. In the spa’s locker room she found her overnight bag with a card from Matt telling her to get dressed and meet him outside. She found him beneath a willow tree with a bottle of champagne, strawberries, and a ring. “I mustered out a ‘yes’ through the tears,” she remembers.
